Storyline

Inspector Jean Claude Fornier is visiting Hawaii in honor of Magnum winning the award for the best private investigator of the year. Just as Fornier is about to present the award to Magnum, the inspector collapses. When Inspector Fornier's death is ruled a murder, Magnum is determined to find those responsible. Before long Magnum finds he has some unwanted help. Luther Gillis and, one time meter maid turned private investigator, Tracy Spencer, are also on the case. Magnum tries to blow them off while he follows a lead from Fornier's notebook and comforts Carrol on the death of her lover. Magnum discovers Fornier's true mission on the islands was to investigate an international drug smuggling ring involving the Richard Lindley detective agency, Spencer's employer. As Magnum investigates further, evidence begins to point to the involvement of Spencer herself. Written by Christopher D. <imdbreviews@gmail.com>

Who is Sam Spade and is Magnum a relative
30 June 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

One of those fun episodes with some recurring characters. We begin with a black and white homage to those great mysteries featuring Sam Spade. Elisha Cook Jr. even does a turn as his character Wilmer Cook from The Maltese Falcon. The modern story begins with Magnum being awarded the local PI of the year award and being roasted/introduced by his nemeses Luther Gillis. As the presentation of the award by another recurring character, Jean Claude Founier, falls over dead: poisoned. Who killed Founier? Gillis is on the trail along with ex meter maid/fired detective Tracy Spenser and officer Lt. Gordon "John Wayne" Katsumoto. Will Magnum figure it out first and get his award. Maybe but will Stephen J Cannell guesting as a hotel detective be a help or hindrance or something more.
