After leaving an audition to be one of Tony's two new assistants, one of the positions which she does get, Laurie Allmont is almost killed in a burning elevator, but is saved by Tony. Beyond being shaken by the incident, Laurie thinks nothing else of it. But when Laurie almost drowns in rehearsing one of Tony's underwater illusions, Tony knows that another near death incident is no coincidence even for someone as accident prone as Laurie says she is. The first person that Tony thinks they should speak to is Laurie's estranged husband, Gary Allmont, a former merchant marine. Laurie is certain that he wouldn't want to kill her as despite their marital problems, she knows he still loves her. Their marital problems started three months ago when his company found out he was convicted for a felony when he was younger and thus let him go.
