It is revealed that the bespectacled convict Frank --- posing as Charles "Chuck" Larrabee --- had cut the mike-cord to the fire-tower's radio while he and the soon-to-be-deceased Tony Parisio (whom Frank murdered to prevent him from sending a message on the radio; Frank had waited on killing Tony because doing so would have been unnecessary if Tony had been unable to repair the smashed radio, but then Frank had felt forced to kill Tony after seeing that he would indeed be able to jury-rig the radio enough to transmit) were waiting in the tower for Mac to return from his mission to save Ranger Liz from being held hostage by the other convict, Mark Fulton (posing as Henry Colter, and wearing Colter's fishing-lure-decorated blue denim hat). Yet earlier, when Mac and the others first return to the tower after realizing that Fulton had taken Liz hostage, they see the smashed radio lying on the floor, with the black-rubber-strain-relief-equipped end of the mike-cord already ripped out of the mike's base. Fulton did not rip the wire out of the mike when he smashed the radio with the butt of Liz's rifle; he just bashed in top of the radio itself and left it and the still-connected mike on the table, before ordering Liz at gunpoint to lead him out of the woods by way of the alternate trail which Liz had mentioned the day before, after serving coffee to the hiking party. When Pete Thornton established a stress-relief program for Phoenix Foundation employees, I thought it was a pretty good idea. The four men I was going to meet worked in high-pressure Phoenix positions throughout the country. My job was to take them over Mount Cascade on a 5-day hike. They'd have a chance to blow-off some steam and just forget about their jobs. And me? Well it was just something I liked to do.
