Saved by MacGyver's charisma
In the fifth episode of MacGyver, he has to go and steal some diamonds back from a shady casino owner. And even though the episode shows all the traits of a typical MacGyver episode, it is sub-par and just saved by Richard Dean Anderson's acting and charisma.

It is not that the episode is bad per se. MacGyver doing a little bit of a James Bond impersonation in a casino, stealing some diamonds, and giving a lesson to the shady casino owner makes for a fun enough episode. But the invents are not very interesting, and just seem to be there to fill time, as we have seen them all before, and MacGyver doesn't stretch his mental muscles at all. It is also strangely paced, slow and on little bursts of action. On top of that, the bad-guy-of-the-week is not especially interesting or menacing.

A good enough episode, but not as good as one should expect from MacGyver.

MacGyver vs. the House

How do you swipe two hundred pounds of diamonds from a public place? That's the dilemma facing MacGyver in this slick first-season episode.

Heists work best with a gang of misfits but MacGyver likes to work alone. He is, however, lumbered with a Senator's gung-ho, grown daughter. It doesn't hurt that she's not hard on the eyes in a 1980s way.

And we get to see MacGyver in formal wear! And proves he has perfect pitch.

It would have been a better two-parter with MacGyver plotting the heist the first week and the heist playing out the second. But MacGyver plays it by ear, thanks to clever script writers who always toss him what he needs.

It's not a fight in the cause of freedom (except to "liberate" the diamonds) but nevertheless one of my favorite first-season episodes.
