They and some objects remind Mac of foreign adventures he had the last seven years around the world. Pete says he was thinking about the first assignment he ever gave MacGyver, and references part of an episode from the first season, but it's been previously established that MacGyver met Pete seven years ago and started working for the Phoenix Foundation shortly thereafter and that he and Pete had been on a number of wild assignments all over the world in those seven years.
