- After Kelly Henderson competes against Mac and Pete for the Phoenix Foundation's field exercise trophy, she learns her father, Joe "Bushmaster" Henderson, went down in a plane on the way to Panama. He needs rescuing from San Perez, a Latin America territory held by Colonel Salazar from a recent military coup. It is definitely an anti-American regime. Word has come back that Joe will be tried as a spy and executed in short order. Mac is sent by boss Jeff Moore to retrieve Joe. Jeff personally pilots the plane to drop Mac. Just as the plane is ready for Mac to jump, Kelly pops out with a parachute first. She has stowed away to help in the rescue. Their contact, Lt. Paul Parra, is Joe's army-appointed defense counsel. As Kelly packed a small arsenal but no passport, she and Mac are arrested at the first checkpoint. Mac starts working his magic with a mere handful of dust that allows the pair to escape. That night, in the church, they meet Parra, who goes out the door with Mac. Within a few yards, two guards step out and lead Mac to Colonel Salazar. He has Mac locked in the same chamber as Joe. This was part of the plan, to get Mac to where he can help Joe escape. Mac asks Parra to get the tube of freon gas from his refrigerator's plumbing. It takes a trapped rat to get a line out a pipe so that Parra can attach the freon. Mac uses the freon to freeze the lock to a brittle, breaking temperature. The two are joined by Kelly and flee. The escape is noticed, so all roads will be carefully watched. Mac manages to appropriate an old jeep to run on the railroad tracks across the boundary gorge. First, though, he has to plug radiator leaks with raw eggs. Finally, the three hop in the jeep and head for the bridge at the border. Salazar gives chase causing Mac to fabricate a firebomb out of a gas can plus the tear gas and ammo that Kelly brought. He uses a metal pipe to make sparks against the rail to light a paper fuse. Mac tosses the bomb, stops the pursuit, and the jeep crosses the gorge to a rendezvous spot with a chopper.—Garon Smith
