- After being cited for reckless Jeep driving, Colonel Potter voluntarily takes driving lessons from Rizzo and B.J. decides he will make all the money he can to pay the second Mortgage, by gambling.
- Klinger is preparing for a poker game, when the mail comes in and brings laundry inventory forms that Potter has been waiting for 3 months. Potter insists that Klinger completes the forms, which Klinger says will take 3 days (and he will miss the poker game). Potter is a stickler for army rules and insists that duty comes first.
After being cited for reckless Jeep driving in Kimpo (Seoul.. going 25 mph in a 15mph zone), Colonel Potter has to take a driving lesson as per regulations. There is a lesson with Rizzo (GW Bailey) the very next day, but Potter wants to do it after the poker game, but Klinger insists that duty comes first and makes him take the driving lesson. Rizzo says Potter doesn't have to attend the class, but he insists that he would never misuse his seniority and would do things by the book. Potter says that to Rizzo, Potter is just "one of the boys". Potter sleeps through the class (Rizzo argues that the right of way goes to the animals) and then flunks the written test (he scores 26 out of 100). Nobody has ever flunked the written test before. As a result he misses the poker game. Klinger completes the laundry inventory forms and wants to head for the poker game, but Potter makes Klinger help him study all night for the back-up written test the following day. Potter passes the test with 98 marks the next day. Then Rizzo asks him to pass the driving test. Potter drives, and barely avoids hitting Klinger who is wandering on the main road, all groggy from being up all night. Rizzo passes Potter for avoiding hitting a serviceman and going into a tower of crates instead (crates never have the right of way).
B.J. decides he will make all the money he can to pay the second Mortgage, by gambling. he got a letter from Peggy mentioning that she is working at a local diner to pay off the 2nd Mortgage which is due in 6 months. Now she is waiting on their friends. BJ feels bad as she also put him through med school and BJ thinks he is letting his family down. Now its his turn to support Peg while she takes care of Erin. By now BJ was supposed to have his own practice, with the 2nd mortgage a memory. BJ bets big at the poker game and Hawkeye sees that he is bluffing most of the time. BJ even bets his wedding ring on one hand. BJ is up and everybody else loses. They all stop playing, but BJ is really upset as this is the first time he is winning, but they don't know he is also desperate. But they still shut shop. Next BJ goes to the Officer's club and engages new enlisted men into a game of pin-ball for $100/game. Hawkeye and Margaret come in and try to reason with BJ, who is still indignant. Margaret argues that BJ has the most to lose as he also has the most. Next morning BJ offers Peggy's rum cookies to everyone as a peace offering.
After passing the tests, Potter travels on horseback and avoids driving altogether.
