- Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world... Lt. Carlye Walton (Blythe Danner) had to walk into Hawkeye's (of the 5 MASH units, 3 Evac hospitals and countless aid stations, Carlye is assigned to the 4077th). Carlye (Blythe Danner) is the one who got away; during Hawkeye's residency in Boston, the young nurse and resident lived together for 18 months. They had a small flat which they painted together. Hawkeye was hopelessly in love with her and couldn't live without her. Carlye left him because she knew how much Hawkeye loved medicine; she foolishly considered his passion for being a surgeon some sort of competition where there are winners and losers. Hawkeye is visibly shaken by Carlye's presence in camp. He goes with BJ to welcome her and her fellow colleague to the 4077th MASH. Carlye is too stunned to see Hawkeye and later comes by the Swamp to catch up with him.
Carlye is married to an advertising professional named Doug, who is serving the war in the Navy. No children yet. Hawkeye is still a bachelor. Calye is upset with Hawkeye for being wedded to his profession and not giving her time and attention, which is got from Doug. Hawkeye counters that he was broke and was trying to make a life for them together. Carlye says that he was never ready to get married, ever. Doug was also struggling when they got married and was able to commit to something beyond his work. Hawkeye says that there has been no one since her.
Things are awkward between them in surgery as Hawkeye keeps making snide remarks at her. They agree to talk after surgery, and Hawkeye takes her to an abandoned shack. Hawkeye admits to Carlye that it is not possible for him to be normal around her. he wants to get rid of some of the unpleasant baggage. Hawkeye hated Carlye for years for betraying him and leaving him. She broke his legs making it impossible for him to stand on his 2 feet. and when he seemed to have gotten over her, she walks right back into his life. He got over the hate, but never got over the love. They end up sleeping together.
BJ does not judge his pal but answers truthfully that he has never been tempted to cheat on Peggy. He says Carlye is married and having an affair with her is just plain wrong on his part. Carlye puts in for a transfer by telling Potter the truth about her and Hawkeye's past. Hawkeye confronts her and wants her to stay, as they both love each other. She says Doug will want a divorce, and she wants Hawkeye to commit to her. Hawkeye says yes, but psychologically all pores of his body show that he has proposed under duress and against his own sense of well being. They hug and Carlye leaves.
Col. Potter is recruiting art subjects; he does one in charcoal of Radar and another of Klinger as an Olympian. Radar does a fantastic turtle impersonation.
