Potter on the Edge
Hitchcoc28 April 2015
Colonel Potter performs surgery on a young soldier. He thinks everything has gone well, but while he is away, Hawkeye has to go back in and remove a missed piece of shrapnel. Potter is mortified because he feels he may be losing his touch. He begins to get angry and testy, chewing out everyone in sight, including a young guy who is there to tell them of some new treatments. Another plot line starts with Winchester responding to the filth in the swamp. He decides to fight fire with fire and begins life as a slob (hearkens back to the episode where people stopped bathing). Soon there is a sort of Laurel and Hardy I- can-do-more-to-you-than-you-can-do-to-me bit. Arriving abut this time is the inimitable Sidney Freedman. Potter has called him in because he fears he has lost it. There is a real lesson about our fundamental worth and productivity here. Well done.

Warning: Spoilers
Harry Morgan should have won an Emmy Award for his performance in this sublime episode. It's hard to imagine a Henry Blake episode like this really.

All credit to David Hawks (assistant director) and Cathy Kinsock) second assistant directors) for the way they seamlessly directed the extras to observe Hawkeye, BJ and Winchester blowing off steam in the Swamp. This is what makes M*A*S*H special.

Harry Morgan brilliant actor

Harry Morgan's performance in this episode moved me to tears. His usual stoic performance, cracks and you can see the tender insides. With just a look, harry Morgan brought tears to my eyes. Just awesome.

A tour De force from Sherman T

Just finishing watching this simple but compelling episode.

Colonel Potter fears he's loosing his surgical touch after leaving some shrapnel in patient, and calls in (my personal favourite character) Sydney Freedman to " look at the cobwebs in the colonels attic"

The 3 swamp rats take a back seat and provide a little light relief doing a 3 stooges homage, while Harry Morgan steals the show in every respect, his fear of growing older, loosing his surgeons skills, being human are touching beyond compare.

I've no idea if Mr Morgan ever received recognition for his portrayal, if not it's a crime.

Very good and awful

Harry Morgan's performance is a wonderful dramatic turn. Alan Arbus is back as Sidney and he is always great to see. His scenes with Colonel Potter are great.

But ...

The snit between BJ, Hawkeye and Charles us just plain stale and unfunny. When several minutes are spent inside the swamp destroying things you may be tempted to turn off your television set. I sure was.

I couldn't believe the actors agreed to do this.

The idea of Winchester allowing someone to give him a shave is contrary behavior. He wouldn't normally consent to this.

It's really a shame these two acts are put together in the same episode.
