- After a drunken trip to Tokyo, Winchester is visited by his new wife. Meanwhile, the camp is hit with an outbreak of hemorrhagic fever that they don't know how to deal with.
- The 4077 is a mess. Major Disaster (Chuckles) returns from a drunken R&R hung over and looking like a disheveled Swamp Rat. (Gary Burghoff is still getting "also starring" credit.) The guys find black hosiery and film (undeveloped) in Chuckles' bag. They are intrigued when he has no memory of how they got there. Father helps Corp. Shaw in Post Op by steering him away from the juicier parts of the good book. (Solomon had a lot to sing about!) Shaw has Korean Hemorrhagic Fever (KHF) and cannot have water... but he looks better than Chuckles. The staff meeting convenes to discuss KHF. The fever has 3 phases; KHF is not contagious but 10-20% will die. This appalls Col. Potter. The Surgeon General has no useful information. HQ issued a directive to change Phase 3 treatment: I.V. 3% salt (saline) solution is strictly forbidden. Deviation in treatment is a Court Martial offense. As the doctors worry, Klinger develops Chuckles' photos and Chuckles starts thinking about lawyer shopping. Shaw is slipping fast and his sodium continues to drop. The doctors brainstorm: Isotonic saline has only 1% salt, unlike regular 5% saline or the 3% saline they are forbidden to administer. It may be a criminal offense, but Potter cannot sit and do nothing while patients die. Donna Parker, a surprise visitor to the 4077, reveals there may be some hope for "Chuck" Winchester. Hawkeye and BJ haunt Post Op and the lab. Later, there are 2 reasons to celebrate. "Cuddles" has returned to the bottom of the pickle jar and Shaw is recovered.—LA-Lawyer
- The 4077 is a mess. Major Disaster (Chuckles) returns from a drunken R&R hung over and looking like a disheveled Swamp Rat. (Radar (Gary Burghoff) is still getting "also starring" credit.) The guys find black hosiery and film (undeveloped) in Chuckles' bag (they were looking for their presents). They are intrigued when he has no memory of how they got there. They drop the film into x-ray room to be developed.
Father helps Corp. Shaw (James Keane) in Post Op by steering him away from the juicier parts of the good book. (Solomon had a lot to sing about!) Shaw has Korean Hemorrhagic Fever (KHF) and cannot have water... but he looks better than Chuckles (whom Hawkeye and BJ drag to the Post Op and then to the staff meeting). The staff meeting convenes to discuss KHF, which is spread by insect or mite bites. The fever has 3 phases; KHF is not contagious but 10-20% will die.
This appalls Col. Potter. The Surgeon General has no useful information. HQ issued a directive to change Phase 3 treatment: I.V. 5% salt (saline) solution is strictly forbidden (Phase 2 kidneys shut down, so water is prohibited. Phase 3, kidneys come back online and discharge sodium by the kilo, which is why the directive to prohibit the saline solution makes no sense). Potter argues that the many boys cant handle the saline and drown as their lungs fill up with water. Deviation in treatment is a Court Martial offense (Automatic loss of rank and pay, and a dishonorable discharge). As the doctors worry, Klinger develops Chuckles' photos (There is one lady whose back keeps showing up again and again, but no face. In one of the photos the lady has a bouquet and is kissing Winchester) and Chuckles starts thinking about lawyer shopping (as Klinger tells Winchester that he got a call from a lady in Seoul, who calls herself Mrs Chuck Winchester III, and is on the her way to MASH 4077).
Shaw is slipping fast and his sodium levels in urine continues to drop. The doctors brainstorm (Past cures for KHF have only used high concentration saline solutions.. Nobody has ever tried low concentration salines): Isotonic saline has only 1% salt, unlike regular 5% saline or the 3% saline they are not forbidden to administer. It may be a criminal offense, but Potter cannot sit and do nothing while patients die. Donna Parker (Claudette Nevins), a surprise visitor to the 4077. Winchester takes her to the swamp for a chat and she realizes that Winchester does not remember their wedding. She reveals there may be some hope for "Chuck" Winchester. She confirms that the marriage was not legit (as the ceremony was performed by a bartender) and has a good laugh about it. They relive that night and share some fond memories. Winchester kisses Donna. Hawkeye and BJ haunt Post Op and the lab. Later, there are 2 reasons to celebrate. "Cuddles" has returned to the bottom of the pickle jar and Shaw is recovered. BJ performs a ceremony in the mess tent to reverse the marriage of Charles and Donna.
