- Colonel Potter must decide whether to blow the whistle on an old army chum, Woody Cooke (John McLiam), whose military mistakes are costing human lives. Potter has known Woody since WW I and he is one of his oldest and best friends through his army life. Woody had a desk job at I Corps dealing with Fuel supply lines to the front. He went with his team to sort out a supply issue at a unit which came under enemy fire. His unit men at MASH 4077 tell BJ and Hawkeye how Woody panicked under pressure. He ordered his driver to stay at his post under heavy under fire and ordered a platoon to defend a ridge when division orders were to evacuate.
Hawkeye tries to tell Potter about all this, but Potter wont hear any of it. Potter tells off Hawkeye saying that what he has is only hearsay and that woody is a damn fine soldier and had a good reason for the decisions he made under fire. He is judged by some "wet behind the ears" soldiers who have a chip on their shoulder. Potter speaks to Woody who says that the kids were without leadership and that he couldn't have left them alone. He enjoyed being under fire at the front. Potter speaks to Sgt Zurilli (Jim Lefebvre), who confirms the sequence of events involving Woody. Potter confronts Woody and declares that he will put him on report. Woody ends his friendship with Potter over this. Potter apologizes to Hawkeye and says that he was being protective of Woody as he doesn't have many friends left that are of his own age.
BJ suffers from both an ingrown toenail and from Charles' insistence on playing his Mahler records. Due to his toenail, BJ is not able to leave the swamp to get away from Winchester's music. Margaret has got a new record player, but doesn't has any records to play, so she is extra nice to Winchester in order to persuade him to lend some records to Margaret till hers arrive by post. Winchester refuses to give any to Margaret.
BJ files Winchester's record player needle so that it wont play records any more. This is Winchester's last needle and it will take weeks for him to order another one. Then he encourages Winchester to play his records in the jukebox at the officer's club. Winchester agrees as he has no option other than staying in the swamp and swapping high school stories with BJ. he then sends a group of GIs to the club and gives them his own money, so they can party and stop Winchester from listening to his music. The plan works as the GIs wont let Winchester listen to the music that he alone likes in the entire camp.
BJ then tells Margaret that Winchester's player broke down and he is planning to borrow hers by making insincere flattery. He then asks Winchester to ask Margaret "nicely".. Margaret tells Winchester off and Winchester realizes that BJ has been planning this all along (the words Margaret used were the same that BJ used "all it will take is a few beads and some shallow flattery"). Margaret and Winchester team up to play records right in front of BJ and not allowing his any chance to run away from the torture.
