***SPOILERS*** After mobster Conrd "Connie" Brenner, Oliver McGowan, was knocked off by his partner Vic Adams, John Shay, and made to look like a suicide Let. Det. Frank Ballinger, Lee Marvin,is given the assignment to move into the Brenner Mansion in order to keep his live in girlfriend or moll Peg Mallinson,Whitney Blake, from ending up the same way. There's also the matter of Brenner's little black book that can implicate Adams as well as other associates in his crimes that's hidden there that Adams was completely unaware of.

At first hostile to Ballinger's efforts to get her to talk Peg in fear of serving time behind bars as well as Ballinger's aggressive but sweet and tender ways or bedside manners with the opposite sex she opens up to him about her boss and boyfriend Adams' criminal activities. Playing stupid and naive Ballinger gets Peg, in not knowing that he's using her, to reveal her knowledge of Adams' rackets as well as his murder of his boss "Connie" Brenner. Ballinger also discovers that the butler of the house former baseball Washington Senator pitching ace Whitey Stone, Malcolm Atterbury, had s hand in covering up Brenner's murder.

***SPOILERS*** Just when Adams got Det. Let. Ballinger, who by now had discovered Brenner's little black book, where he wanted him with a gun pointed at his head his two accomplices Peg & Stone suddenly got cold feet and chickened out! That making Bllinger's work in disarming Adams and putting him to sleep, with a couple of rights and lefts, that much easier. As for Peg & Stone they got off easy with light sentences for their cowardice under fire when they failed to act on Adams' behalf when the chips were down.
