M-SQUAD – Matinée Trade - 1957 This is the seventh episode of the 1957 to 1960 Crime series, M-SQUAD. The series ran for 117 episodes and features Lee Marvin as the headliner. Marvin is a Lt with the elite M- Squad unit of the Chicago Police Force.

There is a new problem for Police Lt Lee Marvin. Female gamblers are flocking to a bookie joint ran by Robert Burton. The gambling den operates during the afternoon and draws the "Matinee Trade".

Burton seems to have Police protection from a bent cop. The cop, Barry Atwater, is driving a flash car and living in an upscale apartment. These all cost far more than Atwater makes on a cop's salary.

Marvin knows Atwater from the old days and calls him for a talk about old times etc. Atwater invites Marvin to his new digs to meet the new, "little woman", Natalie Norwick. Norwick comes off as a right little charmer.

Marvin finds it hard to believe that his old buddy is bent, so he has another M-Squad detective, William Boyett, tail Norwick. It turns out that Norwick does the collections from various numbers parlors etc and delivers the cash to Burton. Marvin calls in a raid and catches Norwick, Burton and a room full of women in a back room bookie joint inside a women's clothing store.

Norwick soon confesses all to the boys in blue. Hubby Atwater knew nothing about her"job" and thought her cash was family money. When Atwater is called in and told the truth about Norwick, he goes looking for Burton. He intends to put a few bullets in the guy. Marvin talks his friend out of murder and saves himself a bundle of paperwork.

This is a very entertaining episode, with several nice curves thrown at the viewer. One time Oscar nominated Bud Thackery, handles the cinematography chores. Long time television veteran, Bernard Girard handles the direction duties.

Some will remember William Boyett from his 128 episode stint as Sgt MacDonald, on the popular 1968-75 Police show, ADAM-12. (b/w)
