In this 10th episode of Season One, we get our first big-name guest star: Angie Dickinson, who plays "Hazel McLean," the "bar girl" and actually looks and dresses in a very wholesome way. She looks good, and was in her mid-20s when she filmed this episode.
Series star "Det. Lt. Frank Ballinger" (Lee Marvin) looks after Hazel. She's someone he thinks is a good girl at heart and he doesn't want to see get hurt by having lousy associations, especially a fiancé who is probably a thug.
The men in "Hazel's" life are indeed, not good, and the worst is the fiancé "Joe Mazzerin" (William Phipps). He treats her and everyone else like dirt. He is a particularly ornery human and Phipps does a great job of portraying him. Man, this guy has nothing but insults for everyone. (You know "Mazzerin" is one of the bad guys when when he says, "Why don't you sit down and shut up, copper!!" Ha ha. Whenever you hear the word "copper," it's never said a term of endearment!) Anyway, that's the main guy Frank tries to go after, first by slowly gaining his friendship which isn't easy to do since this guy hates everyone.
Another well-known actor, DeForest Kelly, of Star Trek TV fame, plays "Sgt. Miller." I liked Holly Bane as the ex-pugilist/bartender "Jackie Becker." He played a tough guy under restraint and I was wondering if or when he was finally going to lose his cool. Mazzerin was brutal to him, too, and none of it necessary.
Overall, this is a very good episode which is very fast-moving and pretty intense.
