The Build-Up Is Better than the Climax

Big surprise -- Lucy's overdrawn at the bank. This will soon be a tired plot device but it's a first here, so we're all good. She meets with Mr. Barnsdahl and they shift blame back and forth. Lucy has a funny line: "I don't like subtraction". In a huff, she closes out her account and the crusty banker is given a great joke about Christmas coming early.

The bank accidentally issues her a $2000 cheque, and out of spite, Lucy decides to cash it to taunt Barnsdahl, with plans to immediately give it back. The bank closes before she can act, so is forced to take the cheque home, where she hides it in the bottom of a box of chocolates for safe keeping. It's fun seeing Lucy gloat about giving Barnsdahl grief about his bank's incompetence. And since we know she's honest and will be returning it, we're on her side.

This is the first of "Lucy-loses-something-and-needs-to-get-it-back" episodes for this series. It certainly won't be the last. Lucy sports her natural look here and there are lots of dieting jokes in this one. The series often makes reference to Vivian's weight. It's funny because a woman her size would not be considered fat at all in 2023.

It's interesting to think how this show would have been had they kept Dick Martin and Charles Lane as the main male characters in Lucy Carmichael's world vs Mr. Mooney. For BEWITCHED fans, it's fun seeing Sandra Gould as the indignant bank secretary who gives Lucy the side-eye and Reta Shaw as the large, stubborn grandmother in the carnival scene.

It did seem odd to see all that trash strewn on the carnival grounds and even stranger was Sherman's line about throwing the empty candy box off the ferris wheel. The climax in the carnival tent, while not hilarious, is probably the most outlandish of the first season. But in this one, it's the journey -- not the final destination -- that's more enjoyable.
