I used to watch this show when spending Friday nights at my next- door neighbor's house 45 years ago. If I am paying special attention to "Love and the New Roommate," it is because this is Debbie Watson's final performance in a career that lasted less than 10 years.
I first got to know of her from her 1965-66 ABC series "Tammy." Groomed as some sort of Sandra Dee-type actress, Ms. Watson seemed to be plagued with bad luck. That, plus an early marriage and motherhood at age 18, meant that acting took more and more of a back seat.
While this skit (and the others) were standard fare for this show, which was a product of its times, I find it stands out because of how far she had come on a personal level since "Tammy." She was a willowy 22-year-old mother. The show may not have been her finest performance, but given the quality of the cast and what she had to work with, it is not a bad way to end a career.
