Storyline

A nurse (Shirley Hemphill) comes on board to give the crew their company physical but Isaac tries to avoid her, because there's a congenital condition in his family that he fears could jeopardize his job, and the nurse is also attracted to him. A young woman (Connie Needham), who's dating an older man (Gene Barry), brings her mother (Betsy Palmer) to meet him. And when she does, she discovers that he's her old boyfriend. And Julie's (Lauren Tewes) cousin (Richard Dean Anderson) comes on board with his fiancée (Linda Blair) and tells Julie he wants to dump his fiancée because she's "nice", "very nice". Goofs

When Gofer gets his blood pressure checked, the nurse supposedly pumps up the cup way too much, but the maximum the gage shows is just 130, barely above normal. Typically the cup is pumped up to 200 or so, and then slowly let out. See more »

McGyver, the Exorcist, Friday the 13th and Shirley from What's Happening?
30 July 2014 | by See all my reviews

Perhaps one of the grandest ensembles in an episode.

A young man (Richard Dean Anderson) wants to ditch his betrothed (Blair), so he pretends he's a he-man cowboy.

A woman (Betsy Palmer) learns her daughter's older boyfriend (Gene Barry) is an old flame of her own.

And a nurse (Shirley Hemphill) wants to give Isaac a physical.

There's no hint of McGyver, Mrs. Voorhies or the young girl possessed. Still, an intriguing episode for such an arrangement.

It had just been two years since Friday the 13th, McGyver had yet to be, and nearly a decade since the Exorcist.

Hemphill made such rare appearances after What's Happening, so this one is a nice surprise.

I remembered Hemphill's appearance and Anderson and Blair together, but didn't realize they were in the same episode.

Also entertaining as Anderson was riding so high on his General Hospital popularity, he said he would never do Love Boat or Fantasy Island, and here was his Love Boat voyage, so clearly he buckled.
