On the island of Crete, the Shepherd's Bar is run by Erik and Ann Shepherd, along with their loyal employees Nikos and Katerina. Mysterious, recurring patrons to the bar include English ex-pats Major Woolley and his mousy wife Miriam, American brother and sister Philip and Leigh Mervish, and young couple Kirsten and Mark. Two new guests, first writer Don Culley and subsequently Ruth Stewart, a young woman searching for her missing brother, arrive and create complications in the Shepherd marriage. Erik and Ann each experience fragments of memories from their past which suggest neither is quite what they seem. Meanwhile, Don delivers an ominous message to Ann that will change her life forever, and Erik helps Ruth unravel the mystery of her missing brother.
