The vigilance committee in Blue Creek hunts down and murders an innocent rancher. These vigilantes dress in all black outfits and claim to be enforcing the law, but are actually running a protection racket, demanding $100 from the ranchers. One rancher, John Stark, contacts his old friends The Ranger and Tonto for help. When the vigilante leader, Torgeson, tries to intimidate John with a gun, John grabs him and the gun goes off in the struggle, killing Torgeson. John goes on the run but the Ranger manages to convince him to return for a fair trial. The Ranger says, "you can't expect the benefits of a good government if you leave the responsibility for it to others." A good lesson for kids and adults alike. It's interesting that the leader of the vigilantes name is Torgeson. In the 1950s, there was a Major League Baseball player named Earl Torgeson who was a pretty good hitter and fielder. Maybe the episode writer was a baseball fan. Margaret Stewart plays John's wife, Amy Stark. She had a short career in the 1950s mainly on TV. Margaret bore an uncanny resemblance to another actress, Catherine McLeod. Another fine episode with some memorable speechifying about civic duty.
