Beating Nellie
23 April 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Laura is excited about the upcoming race and decides to enter Bunny into it. But when she talks to the Walnut Grove blacksmith, he let's Laura know Bunny will need four new shoes. Laura is distressed about this, and when she asks her father he tells her that if he had the money for shoes, they'd be for her and her sisters, not some horse! Of course, Laura cannot understand this but she doesn't let that get her down. Instead, she goes to work at the livery to earn her horse's shoes.

Harriet Olsen and Nellie are again VERY nasty in this one! I loose any respect I had for Harriet in this episode. I think she was just plain nasty! First off, she cries as loudly to Nels about Nellie's not having a horse anymore. She goes behind Nels' back and buys a thoroughbred and plans for Nellie to ride. When she overhears a conversation that Nellie's weight may just help Laura win, Harriet's selfishness causes her to break Nellie's heart and make Willie ride instead.

Harriet only get nastier. After Laura races Bunny to get Dr. Baker when Willie has a bad stomach ache, Harriet does the ultimate nasty thing. I won't spoil it, but let me tell you...I lost all respect for her. That's low - even for her...

Of course I think we can guess how this one ends. Everyone gets what they deserve, and in spite of Harriet's nastiness, the Ingalls' family showed love at the very end. They got something better in exchange though.
