A Boy's Best Friend...
ExplorerDS678917 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
An old friend has returned to Walnut Grove. Don't remember her? That's because she hasn't been on the show before. Anyway, Miss Ruthy Leland arrives on horseback, much to Harriet's disdain, and together with Laura, they catch up on all the good times. But returning to the present, it seems Ruthy has a fair amount of work that needs doing and her handyman Dewey was showing age, so she was in need of a young boy. Laura refers her to the Carters. This couldn't have come at a more opportune time, because Sarah's birthday was a mere 3 weeks away and Jeb had already picked out his present to her and will pay for it with the money he earned cleaning chicken coops. Jason wanted to buy something himself, but he was a little too little to have a job of his own. John sent him to dig for worms to keep him out of the way. So while Jason went digging, Ruthy rode up to him and asked how to get to the Carter residence. Not knowing what residence meant, Jason introduces himself and instantly jumps at the job offer Ruthy put out on the table. She had her doubts about a little boy doing heavy work, but decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. And so the next day after school, Jason ran off to his new job at Ruthy's summer home. Dewey was a little peeved about his new co-worker, but found he had no choice in the matter.

Jason worked hard scrubbing, lifting, dusting, and when he got home, the little tad was all tuckered out. But when they weren't working, Ruthy taught Jason how to fly fish. A friendship really starts to blossom, but leave it to Sarah Carter to see a problem with this. Things were fine for the time being, until her birthday rolled around and Jason gives her a broach that Ruthy had "sold" him. Well, instead of being appreciative that her son gave that much of a damn about his mother to break his back for three weeks to earn money to buy her such a gift, Sarah told him it was far too expensive and for him to take it back. Jason was too afraid of breaking Ruthy's heart, so Sarah took it back and it was apparent to Miss Leland that Sarah was jealous of their relationship. Sarah was quick to deny, and not only that, tried to wedge herself between them and sway Jason to stay home. But you see, Ruthy had a deep, dark secret she hadn't let anybody in on...she was dying. It was the cancer. She'd been diagnosed by specialists and knew that this would be her last summer (hence the episode title). Ruthy's days were spent in misery, not so much over her condition, but because she missed Jason. Old Dewey decided to intervene and talk to Sarah, who stood by her selfish decision, but she recanted when she learned Ruthy was dying. She takes her helping of humble pie and apologizes to Ruthy for her behavior. She forgives, so they're friends now. Well, Jason gets to spend one more heartfelt moment with Ruthy before she leaves Walnut Grove. She passed away a few months later, but Jason never forgot her or the fun times they had.

Good episode, but pretty sad. The ending is tragic, but then this is Little House on the Prairie and somebody always seems to die. Well, props to David Friedman who turned in a terrific performance as Jason Carter, and Vera Miles was fantastic as Ruthy, and Eric Christmas as Dewey, great as always; one of the few Carter based episodes and I have to say, the family is pretty bland to say the least. Maybe if they had more attention story and character-wise? This episode was a good attempt, however. You really get to see the selfish and insecure side of Sarah Carter, thinking Ruthy was posing a threat to her mother-son relationship. It was really frustrating to see her carry on like that and forbid Jason from seeing Ruthy, and you have to wonder why John didn't intervene? Is he a man or what? Well, even though Mr. Edwards (my favorite character) isn't in it, "The Last Summer" is still a pretty good episode. Very dramatic and sad, but worthy nonetheless. If you like the Carters, check it out. If you don't, skip it. Simple as that.

The Ingalls would have made this a 10/10

Mrs. Sarah Carter really screws the pooch in this episode. If Caroline Ingalls was still playing "Ma", she would have accepted the gift and then done her homework about Ms. Ruthy Leland and found out about why she is being so generous. Even if she did not find out the personal, pressing reason for Ms. Leland's extra generosity - because she seems like a kind, generous lady regardless of her extenuating circumstances - Ma Ingalls would not have treated Ruthy with such immediate contempt at their first meeting. Regardless of the "Ma", she should have checked her out before her little boy worked for the unknown woman. Thank goodness for Dewey! I never liked Sarah Carter even if she hadn't replaced Caroline, and she lives up to that dislike in what should be a slow but sweet episode. Even in the end, Sarah still had not made up for her mistake. The actress playing Ruthy is excellent! It seems guest stars saved quite a few Season 9 episodes!

Sarah Needs Acting Lessons
annykins-2654211 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
And a swift kick in the derriere. No loving mother would EVER have snubbed a gift from a little child and broken his heart. And besides, when Mr Edwards bought a similar cameo pendant for his twenty-something ladylove in a previous it only cost $2.95. Caroline Ingalls was a much better mother and a much better actress. Sarah couldn't shed a single tear and did not deserve that brooch. Vera Miles was simply elegantly sublime. Laura's character was only a window dressing afterthought in this episode. This storyline COULD have been superb if not for silly selfish Sarah and the soap opera violins. Instead it's more like a Ferrari with a flat tire.

One of my favorites. I really liked the friendship between little Jason and the elegant Ruthy. Vera Miles is a great actress.

Not and Ingalls episode
mitchrmp30 November 2013
This is yet another example of a person who's been a long - term resident of Walnut Grove that we've never met before. Laura talks like she's a real dear friend of the family, yet we never met her before.

I can really understand Sara's problem with Jason's working with Ruthie so much. No mother wants to feel she's being replaced by another mother- figure. I can also understand why she had such a problem with the broach, but I think she should have been a little more sensitive to Jason's feelings. She broke his heart. A little boy has no idea how much a broach costs.

The saddest part comes after this. It's something that kids cannot understand. But after Sara finds out the truth, she has no trouble with anything Ruthie gives her. The episode turns on a sad note.

I don't like this episode it is on my list of the worst little house episodes. And I also don't like the way Sarah Carter is in this episode she's just a little B*#!h by being jealous of that poor old lady and starting to judge her when she doesn't even know the whole story. Thinking that she is trying o steal little Jason away from her.this episode mainly turns around the carter family almost like "sins of the fathers" although I don't like the carters that much the other episodes are fine but Overall this episode is boring and I don't like it.P.S I like the laura and almonzo episodes bet. another P.S when your child give's you a birthday present you don't tell him that you can't accept it because he did not pay the right price for it. Sarah carter was just awful here!!!

The Carters
ladee-4686627 January 2024
I love watching the reruns of Little House (it has a channel on ROKU TV) but must say the addition of the Carter family did nothing for the show in my eyes. I never got use to Sarah and John because they were a pretty boring couple. I found Sarah's behavior in this episode very irritating. First of all, they should have met with Ruthie prior to Jason doing any work for her. Secondly, the way Sarah rejected her son's gift was a horrible response from a parent to a child. I'm sure Caroline would have responded differently and Charles would have spoken up if she didn't. I would have loved to have seen Charles and Caroline age in Walnut Grove and have stories written around them as they aged (instead of having them move away). I'll continue to watch because I have many favorite episode (this was no one of them).

One of my least favorite

Warning: Spoilers
I thought this episode was absolutely heartbreaking and made me cringe! How dare she turn her own child's gift away because of her disgusting jealousy! That was a horrible lesson to teach such a sweet and hardworking child. I could hardly watch this episode!
