Dad in training
9 February 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Any of us who have watched every episode a hundred times knows that eventually Mr. Edwards does become a dad, though in later seasons we learn he ended up not making a very good one. In this episode, he gets a hint of what being a parent is like, though we can't overlook the fact that he DID have a daughter at one point.

The fact that Caroline even chooses to leave Mr. Edwards in charge is a miracle in itself. After all, she was a bit hesitant to leave her precious children with the Widow Snider. But she did with a bit of hesitation. The whole time she's gone, however, she doesn't let a minute go by without fretting over them. We even see in this episode (and as far as I know, this is the ONLY episode we even get a HINT of intimacy that must have taken place, Caroline was too involved in worrying about the kids to even realize Charles was wanting her to do her wifely duties in bed one night.

The girls, meanwhile, may not have been getting the care their mother would give them, but who's to say anything really bad happened? They gathered the eggs in the rain and managed to get a hole shot in the roof while doing it. They got to taste rattle snake stew. Carrie got to sit up on the roof with Mr. Edwards. These are all experiences they probably would have missed out on had Mr. Edwards not had the privilege of watching over them.

As far as Mr. Edwards' character is concerned, I think this is one of his best episodes.
