Storyline

Jebediah Mumfort's keen eye and fast arm seem to be just what Walnut Grove's baseball team needs to go up against Sleepy Eye's powerful hurler, Slick McBurney, and end their long-standing losing streak. But, hopes are dashed when his devout wife, Margaret, finds out that most of the town is wagering on the outcome of the game and refuses to let him play; until Caroline Ingalls proposes a creative solution that may save the day and give Walnut Grove the chance to finally defeat their nemesis . Goofs

All the players on the Sleepy Eye team are wearing gloves when fielding. The gloves also have webbing which would not be the case until the early 1900's. The episode takes place in around 1880, and at that time only the catcher and first baseman wore gloves. The other fielders would play bare handed. These are some of the many baseball anachronisms made. See more »

Take me to the ballgame

This isn't one of my favorite episodes, but it's a light-hearted one.

The annual Walnut Grove vs. Sleepy Eye baseball game is in town. This is the only year they have a baseball game. The team is composed of most of the men in town such as Nels, Charles, Mr. Edwards, etc. Reverend Alden is the umpire, which is pretty humorous at times.

Charles discovers a good pitcher when he watches the man throw some rocks at a chicken hawk. After he agrees to pitch, bets are made and his wife immediately protests and doesn't allow him to play. But leave it to Caroline and Reverend Alden to come up with a good use for any money that may be won in the game and she suddenly agrees.

If that's not enough, the men of the Sleepy Eye team are a bit shady. They play by the rules as long as they win, but bend the rules if they start loosing. The pitching is quite commercial as well.

In the end...well, I won't tell how it ends. That needs to be seen by watching this fun episode...Me, I go for the more tenderhearted episodes myself...
