Sam and Gene reach boiling point

An excellent second episode of the classic time travel Police drama "Life on Mars"

Kim Trent is back in town. He is arrested on suspicion of robbery. He is a very violent man. It is believed that there will be a big robbery that day. There is no evidence on him and he has to either be charged or released. Sam wants him released as it is the right thing to do. Gene can't believe his ears, but Sam wants to prove a point and releases him. That day the robbery happens, leaving a worker at the Police station June in a serious condition in hospital. Gene is furious with Sam as if Trent hadn't been released, the robbery probably wouldn't have happened. The next day, they enter scene looking for evidence. They come across Leonard, a rather deaf man who is working with a cart. They see a dent in his cart and think it to be done by the robbers. They take Leonard down the police station and he says one of the robbers didn't have a mask on and dented his cart as a warning if he was to tell the police. They show him a photograph of Kim Trent and he says that is the man. Sam offers to give Leonard witness protection. At the identity line up, Leonard bottles it and says it was none of the three men (one of which being Trent). Sam speaks to Leonard again and he agrees to pick him out the next day. So needing protection, Sam sends Annie to spend the night with Leonard. But the gang turn up and are as ruthless as ever. It leads to Sam, Annie and Leonard being held at gun point by Trent. But Gene saves the day when he sneaks up on Trent from behind and takes the gun off him. The next day Leonard points out Trent at the identity parade. June makes a full recovery in hospital.

Quite a quality episode. My favourite part was when Leonard is told that Annie will look after him to which Gene says: "Well in Leonard, a bit of fanny in the flat" Not very PC, but was 1973.
