Earp's friend Ned Buntline has written a new book titled King of the Frontier featuring Earp being the best in a shootout and at various cowboy activities. Buntline has come west to experience a cattle drive. He is the guest of Miles Breck of the Lazy Q outfit which has reached Dodge City. Breck bets Buntline that Earp can't beat his best men in each activity specified in the book. The bet is $10,000 and Buntline must pay up if Earp declines to participate. Earp is not happy about it but realizes if he declines he will be the butt of every cowboy's joke. Buntline assumes the bet relates only to the cowboy activities but Breck intends for it to include a shootout at 100 yards with Earp using his Buntline versus a man with a Winchester. A miniature rodeo is created with Earp against Breck's best man in four events. When Buntline realizes Breck wants the shootout, he tries to call off the bet but Shotgun intervenes saying he wants to talk to Earp who adds one request. Written by
