While Earp is out of town, Del Mathey replaces Bat Mastersn as the new Sheriff of Ford County. His family who owns a ranch and his girl friend Elsa Jordan whose lawman father was ambushed and killed urged him to run. He believes it to be an office job involving serving subpoenas and other papers. The dangerous work will be handled by Earp as Dodge City Marshal. Earp has to tell Mathey that his limits are the city boundary unless in hot pursuit and that Mathey needs to hire experienced deputies. The county is the Sheriff's responsibility. Mathey's first task is to evict the Grogan brothers from land on which they are squatting. They use rifle fire to drive away the sheriff and his deputy. His deputy quits when he is unable to find help for a posse. Mathey considers quitting but Earp and Elsa convince him to stay.
