- An older Becca () returns to her childhood home, which is now up for sale, reminiscing about her younger days. Younger Becca () hurries to her job at the bookstore, and her friend Goodman () asks about Jesse's () return from his summer away, expressing her surprise at how much Becca builds her life around him. Eric () flirts with Becca, but she dismisses it as nothing more than friendship. Elsewhere, Corky () helps Amanda () move into her new apartment, and they both admit that they will be glad to have space to themselves, unsure if they can "wait" much longer. Later, as Becca and her friends plan a night out, Jesse surprises her a day early, and she immediately leaves with him. She gives him her journal as a gift and says she missed him over the summer, but he seems uninterested in going out and celebrating their reunion, and she sadly observes his many medications. In the future, Becca's husband arrives at the home, and he is revealed to be a cardiologist named David, not Jesse.
The next day, Goodman asks about their night together, and Becca says it was "perfect." They receive a surprise day off from work and decide to go swimming with Eric, and Jesse soon arrives, seemingly taken aback that Becca did not call him and saying he is "not in the mood" to join in. When he mentions his work at the hospice, Goodman tentatively asks if he is afraid of catching AIDS, and he is angry to realize that Becca has not told her friends that he is HIV positive. They argue, with Jesse pointing out that there is no "break" from living with AIDS, and he leaves. He returns to his new apartment and Corky soon arrives, asking for advice about Amanda. Jesse tells him to use protection and wait until he is sure that he loves her, and Corky assures him that he does, saying he does not care about the challenges of their relationship. In the future, David asks Becca about the "ghosts" in the home and guesses that she cannot let go of an old love. Jesse returns Beccas journal, saying it is "too hard" to read her intimate feelings, and asks if they can start over, inviting her over after work. At the bookstore, Goodman says that Becca should've told her about Jesse and points out that Becca has given up a great deal for him despite their uncertain future. Drew, having received a postcard from Paige (), who has married in Spain, laments that their family is going through big changes and breaking up, but Libby counters that their family is just getting bigger. At Amanda's apartment, she and Corky decide that they cannot wait and will take the next step in their relationship that night. Jesse too arranges a romantic evening at his apartment for Becca, but she runs out after a few minutes. David asks older Rebecca about her memories, wondering if she wants to be "seventeen again."
Drew and Libby throw a surprise welcome-home party for Paige, who arrives without Michael, for whom she left Kenny at the altar. Amanda and Corky lie in bed together, taking the phrase "sleep together" rather literally, and express their love for one another. Becca, having burned her journal, comes to see Paige, and Paige sadly admits that Michael is not coming back from Spain and that they broke up because he is too much of a "free spirit" and cannot commit. Later, at school, Becca confronts Jesse and says that she had a terrible summer without him and is scared of the day when she will lose him forever, but wants to make the most of their time together. He says that he is afraid that she will forget him once he is gone and she has found someone new, and he asks that she "keep him with her." In the future, David guesses that Becca is keeping something from him, and she finally begins to tell him about a boy she used to know.
