While Johnny is resting by a stream he meets Ellie Phelan who is the daughter of Jim Phelan a swamper and drunk but a college graduate. Her cousin Chad Walters and Greg Thatcher arrive to persuade Jim to help them rob the express office by knocking on the door to get the clerk to open the door. They pay Jim $300 for his part. He tells Ellie is going to use the money to send her back east for the education he has always promised. After Johnny tells Troop about Ellie, Troop warns Jim not to do anything illegal. Jim tries to return the money but Chad and Greg tell him there is no turning back. Troop spots the robbery attempt and is forced to shoot Chad who accidentally kills Jim while Troop captures Greg. They hide Jim's involvement from Ellie and allow her to go east as Jim had planned. Written by Anonymous
