Bob Cawley and five Cawley gang members kill a train conductor in a robbery at Sherman. A change of venue is given when a jury cannot be impaneled. Johnny brings Ben to Laeamie for trial where Troop and Judge Trager assume the residents will act differently. However, after the Judge's clerk is beaten, the juror summons stolen, and fliers passed out saying jurors will die, people are scared. Troop takes a new set of summons to pass out but everyone refuses to serve. In the Birdcage Judge Trager says he only needs one juror in extreme emergencies. Troop draws Lily's name as he pulls one summons at random. She refuses to back down in the face of Troop's concern. She is held in protective custody overnight in the jail while Troop and Johnny keep watch with no help from the town. Early in the morning the gang enters Laramie to break Bob out. In the ensuing gunfight Troop, Johnny, and Lily kill the five gang members. Lily is the town hero. Written by

Marshal Dan Troop
I've been Marshal here a couple of years, but this is the first time I've been ashamed of my badge. Before I leave here one of two things is going to happen. Either I get a jury out of this crowd to try Bob Cawley or I drop my badge in the dirty sawdust where it belongs. Now the Lord refused to spare Sodom and Gomorrah for the want of ten good men and I tell you Laramie will not be spared either. I'm not the law here, you are. This badge rests on you. I only wear it.
