Storyline

The Marshal and Johnny receive word that Jack McCall has shot Wild Bill Hickock in the back and is on the loose. Johnny checks on his friend Jess Mitchell who has a leg injury. Although Jess refuses to have the doctor treat him, Johnny decides to take the doctor to Jess anyway. While picking up the doctor, Johnny learns that the little Mitchell girl is going to need an operation the next day. When Johnny returns to Jess's cabin with the doctor, they find him held hostage by Jack McCall. McCall forces Johnny to return to Laramie to pick up a horse and week's worth of food for him. Johnny returns to Laramie but upon hearing the girl is worse decides he must follow orders and not tell Marshal Troop about McCall. However, Troop wonders what is happening when he learns Johnny is buying a second horse and follows Johnny to Jess's cabin where McCall is tipped off about Troop forcing a confrontation.
