As Melanie catches Ollie's attention in the Birdcage he falls for her under Dan's watchful eye. Dan wires the law in Casper learning they swindled a rancher who thought he was going to marry Melanie. Troop warns Farnum not to try anything. After Ollie announces his engagement, Dan tells him what he has learned. Ollie knew part of the story. That night Farnum puts the bite on Ollie for $5,000 which Ollie pays. The next morning Dan confronts Melanie as she packs. Farnum walks in and pulls a derringer on Dan.
