... starring Drs. Graham and Eloise Barnes in the roles of George and Martha.Dr. Graham Barnes (actor Brent Spiner), a psychologist, plays at being a naughty boy and considers himself an amateur anthropologist.Meanwhile his wife Dr. Eloise Barnes (actress Margaret Colin), a psychiatrist, displays a certain contempt for aging bad boys and for psychologists, as well. These two middle-aged, ice-packed shrinks been playing mind games with each other for some twenty-odd (yes, increasingly odd) years, with their daughter Camilla serving as apologetic referee.Over the past few weeks, however, their marital Cold War has escalated beyond the bounds of bourgeois propriety and even legality. Now both spouses are considered persons of interest in the murder of a masochistic, emotionally needy, even infantile, jazz musician. (Sorry: "infantile jazz musician" is probably redundant.)Did Dr. Barnes (homme) disfigure and murder his wife's handsome young lover in a jealous cuckold's rage? Or did Dr. Barnes (femme) perhaps kill her gauche, clingy suitor and then frame her husband thus conveniently ridding herself of two annoying men at once? (Oops "annoying men" ... another tautology, sorry.)While both are brainy, neither Dr. Barnes (homme or femme) appears to able to produce a solid alibi for the time of the murder. In any case, the rancorous banter and nasty antics of happy loving couples such as Graham & Eloise Barnes goes a long way towards explaining why Detective Robert Goren has never evinced any interest in matrimony or long-term relationships.* * * * *
