During the trial the defendant's attorney questions a physician from a local free clinic who treated him on several occasions for depression, the attorney noted on each visit he was prescribed Haloperidol (Haldol).
Haloperidol is actually an anti-psychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia, mania in people with bipolar disorder, acute psychosis and drug induced hallucinations. It also acts as a powerful sedative, as such it is not an effective drug for treating depression and would never be prescribed for it, this is something a medical student would know. The appropriate drug to prescribe for depression would be an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) such as Fluoxetine (Prozac), Paroxetine (Paxil) or Sertraline (Zoloft).
