Storyline

Sergeant Greevy and Detective Logan investigate a knife attack on city councilor Chuck Halsey, the apparent victim of a mugging and they eventually arrest two black teenagers. They deny stabbing the man admitting only to robbing him while he lay there. Greevy had heard rumors that Halsey was once a bag man collecting the take at the criminal courts but the man's reputation in recent years has been clean. An eye witness leads them to a mob hit man, Tony Scalisi, who agrees to wear a wire in return for a lesser charge. Halsey had been called as a witness in a federal investigation into parking contracts and it appears that police Deputy Commander William Jefferson, one of ADA Robinette's childhood heroes, may be implicated in the crooked scheme. Stone seeks the assistance of the FBI but their sting doesn't quite go down as planned. Written by garykmcd

Trivia

The last of the original cast members, Steven Hill (who plays District Attorney Adam Schiff), left at the end of the 1999-2000 season. However, since Hill was not in the pilot episode he may not, by some, be considered to be part of the original cast. The role of the District Attorney in that episode was played by Roy Thinnes. How it all started, even if it is the sixth episode aired
31 July 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The series pilot, "Everybody's Favorite Bagman" was actually the sixth episode aired that year. If you wonder why this episode of Law and Order looks as though it was shot in a different decade - different film quality, George Dzundza (Max Greevey) has magically lost 20 pounds, and a completely different actor (Roy Thinnes) is playing a completely different DA (Alfred Wentworth)- it is because this episode was shot as a pilot for CBS in 1988, and rejected by that network. Thus when you hear comments made that seem to be introducing the characters after you have been watching them work together for six episodes, that is actually what is going on.

There are really nothing really remarkable about the plot, so I'll let you watch and see what happens. In this actually first show, it is the structure of the episode - all police first half, all prosecution second half, that is actually on display.
