Det. Lenny Briscoe and his new partner Det. Ray Curtis investigate the abduction and murder of12 year-old Jodie Gaines. She was dropped off by her school bus less than a block from her after school piano lesson. She never showed up. They get a lead from an ATM camera where they find a white van parked on the street where walked by. It leads to the arrest of Nick Capetti who is charged with murder. At his arraignment however the dead girl's mother, Karen Gaines, shoots him dead. She gets a sympathetic judge and a lenient sentence leading DA McCoy to have the case re-investigated. The new suspect in the case is Karen Gaines herself. Written by

The psychiatrist at the Gardner Clinic makes multiple errors, and possibly commits crimes, by revealing confidential medical information about his former clients to Lenny and Rey. According to medical-privacy laws, the psychiatrist isn't even allowed to confirm whether a client is under his care, let alone what the client confided to the psychiatrist in therapy.
Moreover, the psychiatrist reveals that two of his clients had an affair, and this fact is used by the police to expand their investigation. Both clients of the psychiatrist would most definitely have any convictions against them thrown out because the evidence against them was illegally obtained. Patient-client privilege is absolute, and without the psychiatrist breaking of confidentiality, the police would never have had a case. See more
