I like this episode. Laverne's Pop gives her diamond earrings that belonged to her late mother and asks her to do something with them like make a pendant or necklace out of it so he can then give it to Edna. Laverne is understandably hurt by this because she wants to have her Mom's earrings, but she doesn't let Pop know. I knew he had to be faking her out because there's no way in the world he would give something like that to Edna no matter how much he loved her.
Pop is very old fashioned and traditional and those earrings rightfully belonged to Laverne and I just couldn't see him giving that to Edna....and I also couldn't see Edna accepting something like that either. I loved the final scene where he gave them to a shocked and surprised Laverne along with the letter. I really enjoy Penny Marshall when she does serious scenes and wish she had done a television drama after Laverne & Shirley had ended rather than jump right into film directing because I think she would've been so good in it.
I haven't even mentioned all the comedy part of the episode.... Laverne goes out with a sleazy Hollywood producer who appears to be flat broke and takes her to a hill overlooking L. A. to try and score with her. She wears her Mom's earrings and loses one while in his car. Hijinks ensue while she and Shirley go back to the hill later that evening to retrieve it.
I liked the closing scene where Rhonda wound up going out with the sleaze and she waves the big fat check he gave her to star in his next film. It turned out he really is loaded and poor Laverne looks crushed lol. Good episode.
