- With a history of depression, a bloodstream full of booze, and a high-pressure job in medical research, Henry Winton seems like an open-and-shut suicide case after his body turns up in the canal. But the more Davies looks at SwanMed, the less he likes--particularly when Winton's pretty young coworker goes missing.—Anonymous
- A jogger looking over a bridge notices a body in the canal. Davies is sent down to the morgue to investigate. The deceased is Henry Winton, a pharmaceutical research scientist. The examiners assume suicide as he had rocks in his pockets and a history of depression; however, Davies notices that he was in the midst of redecorating his apartment and had no signs of a struggle on his fingernails, and doesn't think it is a suicide. He visits Winton's lab, where he meets Anna Beauchamp. She directs him to Winton's partner, but also asks if she can call him the next day. Davies visits Winton's partner Carl Swannee, an eccentric scientist who is intensely focused on his research, leaving his wife to run most of the rest of his life. He explains they were working on an Alzheimer's drug. Meanwhile, after everyone leaves the lab, Beauchamp takes some files from the cabinet.
The next day, Davies returns to the lab where Beauchamp has not appeared. Davies visits her roommate and her parents, none of whom have seen her in days. The lab leader comes to the station to report that Anna has stolen some potentially valuable lab papers. Revisiting the roommate, she mentions that she had seen the victim, Anna, and an older man, a professional, having a drink in the garden.
Meanwhile, Anna's credit card is being used in Wales. Davies drives to the location, where a hotel manager confirms she stayed overnight. He's directed to an artist, who has painted a version of "The Scream" with Anna in her car as the subject. He believes there was someone else in the car. Davis interviews a scientist to whom he thinks Anna may have attempted to sell the papers, but he denies it. Finally Anna's car and body are found in an old quarry pond. The papers are still in the car as well.
Eventually Swannee confesses that Winton had fallen into shallow water and drowned in a drunken stupor, and he had moved the body to the canal and faked the suicide. However, Davies realizes that Swannee cannot drive, and revisits Swannee's wife. She reveals that she had helped Swannee move the body, had been in Anna's car when they ran into a tree, and had pushed the car into the pond afterwards in an attempt to fake another suicide.
