A drought is plaguing the Laramie area hurting the ranchers and Laramie. Most of the local ranchers are driving their herds to Calgary but against the advice of Jess, Slim refuses to join them. The merchants are requesting cash from Jess and Andy when they go to Laramie. While there they witness Hake Ballard gun down a man who rode into town before him. Due to Jess's statement Hake is cleared by the deputy. During a meal together Jess learns Hake is taking a herd to the Sweetwater mining district over the Cherokee Trail which impresses Jess. It is too late to join the Calgary drive but Jess suggests they join Hake on his drive even though Jonesy says it is a dangerous trail at this time of the year. Slim is informed personally by Frazer who runs the stage line that they having to close the line due to a loss of business. With this news Slim decides to take Jess's advice.
