When Slim is shot and left to die by an outlaw after a robbery, it is up to Jess to find him. He catches the shooter who refuses to talk to the law or his sister. With the law's hands tied, Jess takes it upon himself to take action.

Slim Sherman is part of the posse trailing after fugitive stage robber Joel Greevy and his two partners, when alone Slim catches up with Greevy and is shot by the thief and left for dead in the hills. Jess who is with the rest of the posse notices Slim is missing and no one knows where Slim is. Jess, trying to backtrack Slim, catches Greevy who is riding Slim's horse back to Laramie to retrieve the money and see his older sister, Myra. The cocky thief won't tell where he left Slim unless he is set free, telling lies about what happened at every turn. Jess even pleads with Myra for help but she initially refuses. Jess is backed into a corner and with bad weather closing in he has to play a desperate game with Greevy, which could jeopardize his friendship with Sheriff Mort Cory, in order to save Slim's life.
