Billy Pardee who is captured and three men make an attempt at robbing the Wells Fargo office in Laramie, killing the deputy sheriff in the process. Slim and Jess in town join the posse which decides the gang is returning to Laramie to break out Billy who is part of the Creighton gang. When Billy's partners attempt to break him out of jail, Sheriff Cory is wounded and presses Slim Sherman into service as acting sheriff with Jess Harper as his deputy. They have to keep Billy in jail, prepare for the trial, and during the trial ordered to hang Billy. It's a job that Slim doesn't want but there's nobody else to protect Laramie from Tom Creighton, Billy's half-brother and outlaw leader out to make sure that Billy doesn't hang for murder. With most of the townsfolk afraid to stand against Creighton, the odds are against Slim and Jess living long enough to carry out the execution an hour after dawn. The 30-30 was not invented until 1895, some 20 years after the setting of this show.
