Jess Harper is on his way back to Laramie after a cattle sale when he stops to help a stranger involved in a gun fight with two men. The man, Cully Brown, is caught up in a gun battle with bounty hunters but he doesn't tell Jess. They are able to drive off the bounty hunters but Cully has lost his horse so Jess lets him ride double with him to a nearby town. They are enjoying drinks at a saloon when another man pulls a gun to shoot at them. Jess kills the man but is severely wounded in the head. They think he is going to die but he recovers only to find Cully switched identities with him and took his money from the cattle sale. Locked up, Jess is able to escape but finds himself involved in a deadly game of stolen identities, theft, jail breaking, and attempted murder as he tries to find the man who stole his name, his money, left him for dead and facing a hangman's noose.
