"The Squawman" guest stars Jack Elam as poor rancher Marcus Taylor, married to a pregnant Indian woman named Kiona (Rosana Soto), who welcome Caine with a dinner of beans, until a stranger attempts to sneak off with a horse. During the fight with Caine, Marcus shoots the thief in the back, and is convinced to take the body into town, where the mayor (Logan Ramsey) arrests both Marcus and Caine as accessories to the crimes of Sam Blake (Hal Baylor) and his outlaw gang. Once the dead man is identified as Sam Blake's son, with a bounty reward of $250, the townspeople change their tune, convincing Marcus he's a hero to seek out the rest of Blake's gang until the new Marshal arrives. The unlucky Marcus instead winds up shooting the Marshal (Orwin Harvey), believing him to be Blake, then decides to await the vengeful gang in his own home, finally acknowledging how much he truly loves his Indian wife, and turning his back on the bigoted townspeople that shunned her. In the flashbacks, James Hong plays Lin, a man saved from death by disciple Caine, who feels only bitterness from hunger, roasting a pig stolen from a neighboring farmer (Victor Sen Yung) who shoots the thief in the back, just as Marcus shot the horse thief. Among the townsmen are Elliott Street and Booth Colman, while Rex Holman is a fearsome visage as Canby, one of Blake's gang. Victor Sen Yung and James Hong had both appeared in the pilot, with Sen Yung doing 6 episodes and Hong doing 8.
