Peter Kastner Comes Home
2 May 2013 | by (Toronto, Canada) – See all my reviews

Toronto variety store proprietor Larry King (Al Waxman) pesters Revenue Canada hoping to get a tax refund and is assigned agent George Willoughby (Peter Kastner). Larry gets the refund but Willoughby says he is dropping by the store to audit the books. Larry frantically tries to find his records.

This is episode four from the first season and is considered a minor classic. Peter Kastner who starred in the Canadian cinema classic Nobody Waved Goodbye in 1964 had gone to America and gotten roles in several movies and TV shows there. He returned to Canada and appeared on King of Kensington a few times I guess as a favour. Canadian greats Dinah Christie and Jan Rubes also guest-starred.

In keeping with the running inside joke of the series Larry subtly needles Prime Minister Trudeau for having accepted the gift of a swimming pool funded by mysterious private donors. The show appeared on the CBC - Canada's national broadcaster and was heavily reliant on funding from the government.

CBC shows had and have a tradition of criticism of the federal government and its prime ministers - in essence biting the hand that feeds them. That tradition is meant to show impartiality. Canada could hardly have a national broadcaster controlled by the government as that would appear totalitarian.
