- While battling to save an oil rig, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman are unexpectedly aided by the Ultimates - Wind Dragon, Long Shadow, Juice, Downpour and Shifter- a new, young superhero group who have been making a name for themselves over the last few months, aided by their agent, Maxwell Lord. Although invited to join the Justice League, they have so far declined.
Wind Dragon develops a new power, so they all return to Cadmus, who are purportedly helping the Ultimates. While being tested in a medical bay, Long Shadow also develops a new power - super hearing, and he overhears the truth - Cadmus created the Ultimates, and their bodies are deteriorating and aren't expected to last much longer.
Later that evening the team escapes the medical bay, only to find a laboratory with their own clones. Confronting Max, he admits the truth, and that all of their lives as they know them have only been false memories. At first the team unleashes their fury on Cadmus' headquarters, but the Justice League shows up to stop them. They turn against the League, in the errant hope that defeating them will give their lives meaning.
In the end the League stops them, with help from Long Shadow convincing Wind Dragon that being a hero is worth being remembered for. While being taken into custody, Cadmus shows up and takes charge, but the League steps in to prevent them taking Long Shadow, who instead joins the League for whatever time he may have left.
