It is the start of series four. The makers have decided that there is mileage in the abrasive relationship between Detective Chief Inspector Mark Perrin and Inspector Kate Longton.

Perrin is his usual short sharp self, when PC Danny Sparks finds a man acting suspiciously in the woods shortly after they found a seriously injured woman.

Brian Adler is bought in for questioning. We know he attacked the young woman. His wife is already suspicious of him, he arrived home from work late. She is also one of this religious types who takes it upon herself to keep her husband on the straight and narrow.

Perrin questions Adler. His wife comes to the police station looking for her husband. She finds Inspector Longton easier to talk to but Longton knows she is playing games and needs to apply pressure on her.

Interestingly this is an episode made before the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 came into force. It seems suspects or their spouses are almost forced to help the police with their enquiries. Rights do not seemed to have been read and forget requesting a lawyer, it seems you have no right to one. It makes you wonder how many people were fitted up in the good old days.

The interplay between Perrin and Longton is good with a possible hint of the thawing of the frostiness.

The story itself was average. It seems to be more about pressurising Adler in the interview room as we saw him attack the woman.
