JOHNNY RINGO "The Stranger" 1960
JOHNNY RINGO was a western series that ran for 38 episodes during 1959-60. The series starred Don Durant as the title character with Karen Sharpe, Mark Goddard and Terence De Marney as series regulars. The series follows Durant, (Ringo) a former gunfighter who decides to go straight. He becomes the Sheriff in the small town of Velardi in the Arizona Territory. The series was one of several (Rifleman, Wanted Dead or Alive, Shotgun Slade etc) with a "gimmick gun". Durant carries a special LeMat revolver equipped with a shotgun barrel under the six gun barrel.
This episode is the 32nd episode of the series. This one really needs to be seen to be believed. We have a fancy dude from Boston who is a karate expert, a saloon girl he loves and the brother of a jailed murderer out for revenge. The dude is played by Charles Aidman, the girl by Susan Cummings and the thug by Burt Reynolds.
Reynolds and several gunman types hit Velardi looking to give saloon girl Cummings a bad time. She was Reynolds' brother's girl back before he went to jail for a killing. The brother now wants the woman disposed of and has sent little brother Reynolds to arrange it. Reynolds however does not want to go up against Sheriff Durant. He intends to drive Cummings out of town.
This idea does not go far, as a Boston dude travelling the west, Aidman, has taken a fancy to Miss Cummings. He steps in when Reynolds and company give Cummings a hard time. The gunman thugs are mightily surprised when the fancy dressed Easterner gives them all a thrashing. Aidman has travelled the world and picked up some karate skills while in Japan.
The cowboy types now decide that guns are needed to settle the dispute. This is where Sheriff Durant and Deputy Goddard step in. Lead flies and two of the three thugs are now in a blood leaking state.
This one really comes off as rather silly if you are asking me. Not a Burt Reynolds fan myself, but still it was interesting to see him in an early role.
