JOHNNY RINGO "The Killing Bug" 1960

JOHNNY RINGO was a western series that ran for 38 episodes during 1959-60. The series starred Don Durant as the title character with Karen Sharpe, Mark Goddard and Terence De Marney as series regulars. The series follows Durant, (Ringo) a former gunfighter who decides to go straight. He becomes the Sheriff in the small town of Velardi in the Arizona Territory. The series was one of several (Rifleman, Wanted Dead or Alive, Shotgun Slade etc) with a "gimmick gun". Durant carries a special LeMat revolver equipped with a shotgun barrel under the six gun barrel.

This episode is the 29th episode of the series.

A local shopkeeper is found hanging one night from a lamp post in Velardi. Sheriff Durant is not sure what to make of the murder. There were no witnesses to the killing. There are however three possible suspects. Three strangers had ridden into town earlier in the night. The three, Buddy Ebsen, Joseph Perry and Michael T Milker all seem to be most unsavoury types.

Also in the mix here is the murdered man's son, Wayne Rogers, his partner, Michael Hinn and the dead man's mistress, Maureen Leeds. Gunplay soon erupts between the three strangers and Hinn and Rogers. It turns out that the whole thing is about a beef over land a few years back in Wyoming. Everyone seems to be out for a spot of vengeance. Needless to say that Durant needs to join in the exchange of lead. This ends up with several of the men ready for Boot Hill.

A much better episode than I'm making it sound like. Ebsen is quite good in a villain role just a year and a bit before striking gold in THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES.

The episode was written and directed by the talented Tom Gries. Writer, producer and director Gries had a hand in, 100 RIFLES, THE GLASS HOUSE, BREAKHEART PASS and the top flight western, WILL PENNY.
