The next day, Joan sees someone spying on her from their yard and Will wonders if it was the murderer, who left behind no clues but a footprint. On the city bus toward school, Joan is approached by a boy about her own age who apologizes for startling her that morning, knows many details about her life - and claims that he is God and wants her to apply for a job at a bookstore in town. Quotes

Cute Boy God: How about you believe me if I agree to overlook that promise you didn't keep?
Joan: What promise?
Cute Boy God: Let's see. That you'd study hard, stop talking back, clean your room, and even go to church, if I recall, if I let your brother live.
Joan: [long pause] How did you know about that?
Cute Boy God: Omniscience. Look it up.
Joan: So, you let my brother live, and now you're here to... collect?
Cute Boy God: No. I don't bargain. That would be cruel.
