George Jefferson IS Jean Val Jean.

Warning: Spoilers
The sweets of 1830's Paris becomes the upper east side in this somewhat serious episode (with tongue in cheek ironic humor) where George's past comes back to haunt him with the arrival of blackmailer Moses Gunn who knows that George was once convicted of a crime and demands a payoff to keep his secret. George, having moved past his sordid past, desperately wants to keep his past hidden, but the presence of Louise, his mother, Lionel, Bentley and Tom Willis keeps interrupting the payoff.

Veteran actor Moses Gunn is excellent as the Shady old pal of Georgia's who will stop at nothing to milk the rise of George's success for his benefit, but George does not want to see his family hurt by his mistakes. Charge of course be in George screws up his attempts to worm his way out of losing dignity, and in his own way comes out a better man with his honesty. It's always nice to see a character like George or (Archie from "All in the Family") have to swallow their pride and 'fess up. While there are laughs, the theme of the episode is more serious and it is well acted and surprisingly real.

George and Monk Davis

There is a scene in this episode that makes me laugh out loud. George kicks Monk Davis in the rear end. Monk's reply: "What is the matter with you, ****?" I'm not going to repeat the word he used. That wouldn't be PC. How fortunate that PC didn't exist at that time, and characters were portrayed as real people. Moses Gunn is great as the hustler trying to shake George down. Gunn also appeared on Good Times (which Mike Evans co-created) as Carl Dixon.
