As my copies tell me, i watched the french version played on MCM, so it was every Saturday night on September 2000 and this is probably how i discovered Amanda ! There was surely an halo effect as Amanda looks like a relative of a friend but honestly, Amanda stunned me by her personality : funny, intelligent, complicated, complex, caring, sweet, organized, well she would be the perfect girl for me ! Her partner is a cool, gentle, good-looking buddy that i'm not (he would be like more a worker i know who can pick up any girl he wants in the building). In all cases, their chemistry is exceptional and the story is really well written : in this first season, we have all the steps of an encounter (initial meeting, from dating to exclusivity, the first moments together) and it feels so true and authentic that i remember to have used some Jill's lines in my own life (especially, when splitting, when he says it's him stopping now to not ending ridiculous)
The other friends are good enough to bring other moments with an excellent Audrey and what's cool is that all this gang are like us, they work and they live in usual lofts : so it's not about the golden spoons teens, the cozy and lazy friends, they are not the amazing and rich docs, lawyers,
On the contrary, they are the little fish who just starts to climb the ladder of life. What i also like is this vision of NYC : it's not about the frenetic Manhattan, it's not the hood too, it's set in a rusty building in a quiet block so it's peaceful. At last, the music is exceptional : the main theme with the piano is a good for this romantic show as Laura Palmer's one for Twin Peaks !
It's hard to apply my rule to pick one relevant episode because it's an ongoing show, with each one being a brick to build a wall.. However if i try to remember the best moments, there are plenty: i would say the rat, the washing machine, the winter choice, the diary, the gallery, the phrase, but i pick finally this first episode because it really gives you the pleasure to see the next and their night fun in the toys shop is really sweet !
Usually, i will soon review the next season but here, i won't do that. When i watched this first one in 2000 and again now, it's so perfect that i don't want to look at their new adventures and expose the risk to be disappointed !
